Have you noticed more of your neighbors investing in a metal roof for their home? Roof technology has come a long way and there are some great benefits of metal roofing. The metal roofing industry is growing at 3% a year and now accounts for about 15% of new roof installations. But there are quite a few metal roofing myths floating around out there, too.

Moving away from standard composition shingles can be out of your comfort zone! New technology comes with new questions: will it be loud? How long will it last? How expensive is it?

With that in mind, here are the 4 most common myths we hear about metal roofing, along with the truth of the matter.

MYTH 1: Metal Roofing Is Loud

TRUTH: As far as acoustics, putting a metal roof on your house is no different from a tile or composition roof.

When you think about a metal roof, the first image in your mind might be similar to an old corrugated tin barn roof (like the picture above), rather than today’s attractive stone coated steel options (like the pictures below).

But never fear! Today’s metal roofs are installed over an underlayment of insulation and sheathing, just like standard composition roofing, which insulates and muffles sound. Additionally, the attic itself serves as an insulating barrier, so you really shouldn’t hear any difference.

MYTH 2: Metal Roofing Is Ugly

TRUTH: Metal roofs have come a long way from corrugated tin on top of a barn!

Today you have a massive variety of options. Standing seam metal roofing comes in an array of colors and gives a house a sleek, modern, minimalist look. Stone coated steel roofing, on the other hand, mimics traditional roofing materials like asphalt, slate, and wood shake, but at a fraction of the weight and three times the durability.

We have a complete Design Guide For Metal Roofing that shows how different metal roof tile profiles work with all kinds of house styles, from ranch-style to a new modern home.

MYTH 3: Metal Roofing Blocks Cell Phone Signals

TRUTH: Designer Roofing has specialized in installing metal roofs for the past ten years, and we have never once had a customer complain to us about poor cell phone reception.

Metal roofs just aren’t substantial enough to block a cellular signal. After all, you probably already use your phone without any problem in plenty of metal-roofed buildings — like churches, offices, and shopping centers — without even noticing.

If you want to know more, we have plenty of information on how construction materials affect cellular service in your home and what you can do to improve your phone signal indoors.

MYTH 4: Metal Roofing Is Expensive

TRUTH: While there’s definitely an up-front investment in metal roofing, it will save you money over the course of its life!

A metal roof typically costs twice as much as a standard composition roof, and we know that’s a big investment on what’s usually considered a “boring” part of your home. But it’s important to realize that metal roofs can routinely last from 40 to 70 years or even more. A typical composition roof would need to be replaced at least 4 times during that same length of time.

There are other financial benefits too:

  • Due to its durability, fire resistance, and low weight, metal roofing increases the value of your home.
  • Its insulating properties help reduce your energy bills.
  • It can lower your homeowners insurance premiums.

What our Clients are Saying

  • Rusty, Plano

All I can say is – dealing with Aaron Lenhart and Designer Roofing of Texas was excellent. Aaron and his people were professional, knowledgeable and nice to work with every step of the way.

I felt their price was fair and they delivered exactly as promised. What more can you ask for in the real world? They started on time, ended on time and the house looks great with the new style of tile. I have referred a few friends to them since then and so far, everyone has been pleased!

  • Rob Paul

The roof is fantastic and I really appreciate Designer Roofing’s hard work and professionalism throughout the process. It was absolutely the right decision for my project. Feel free to hand out my information as a reference for your company should anyone ask, I am happy to help.

  • Kumar, Frisco

I was impressed throughout with Designer Roofing’s professionalism, experience and knowledge of the business. As my agent, you worked with my insurance company to get their approval, and I was delighted to see that you ordered specialized pictures of the house to make it easier for the insurance company to assess the damage and approve.

Your team was experienced and they worked with a good work ethic to get the job done very quickly. This was key since you did not use novices to install the specialized Gerard stone coated steel roof. Your team was well trained: they covered the pool and daily used a magnet to clear the home premises of any metallic materials.

You had no hesitation in ensuring my complete satisfaction, and sent in the experts to fix a couple of minor things that I wanted changed. Please accept my gratitude and congratulations for a job well done and a super service!! I shall be happy to recommend you and your company to anyone without hesitation.

Your crew was attentive to the details and cleaned up well each and every day. And, to top it off, you started and finished when you said you would. Job well done!

  • composite roofing by designer roofing

    Bing and Rachel, Plano

We were battered by the windstorm of April 2008, which tore down our entire fence, a beautiful 10-year old tree, and a huge section of our composition roof.

Designer Roofing came to our rescue and immediately patched the roof to prevent further weather damage. Despite a heavy workload brought on by the storm, Designer Roofing proceeded to replace our entire roof as soon as was possible. They replaced all fixtures and chimney flashings to perfectly match our new roof color, too.

Designer Roofing was very professional throughout the job, helping us understand the re-roofing process, eagerly answering our every question, and giving us the greatest value for our insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs. If we ever need a new roof again, Designer Roofing will be #1 on our list, and we would gladly recommend them to friends and family alike!
